The cosmopolitan and cosmopolitan Madrid is the capital of Spain, which is located in the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula. But the big city flair, the designation metropolis and cosmopolitan city, Madrid could only register for itself in the 20th century. It was only after the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the dictatorial Franco regime (1975) that Spain adopted the parliamentary monarchy and the opening towards Europe in Madrid. Since the implementation of democracy, Madrid and its surroundings have grown into a remarkable industrial area - in 1992 the city was even dubbed European cultural capital. Nowadays the visitor enjoys the aristocratic and historical center of the city. A city walk takes tourists to the most important sights, the magnificent Royal Palace, the Plaza de Oriente and the Almudena Cathedral, which was consecrated by Pope John Paul II.

Numerous traditional shops tempt guests to stroll, look and buy - local products and renowned international brands seduce the visitor. The art mile, on the other hand, offers various museums, palaces and even gardens. Artistic and cultural life occupies an important position in the capital of Spain. The 73 museums document this focus - the National Art Center Reina Sofia, which exhibits works by Picasso, Dali and Miró, is particularly attractive. Concerts, opera and ballet performances as well as theater performances complete the program. The Spaniards' zest for life awakens especially in the evening. Madrid's nightlife is characterized by a pleasant and international atmosphere - numerous bars and restaurants with flamenco music captivate visitors of all generations and nations. The evening or the weekend in Madrid has no orphaned pedestrian zones - life takes place on the street. Another attraction of the capital are folk festivals and the legendary bullfights. The friendliness of the residents and their pleasant character make any city noise and poor air quality bearable. Madrid is densely built up and the narrow streets are like a small town. However, this does not prevent guests or locals from enjoying coffee on the sidewalk of Gran Via.
